It's time for fall vaccines
Influenza, Covid-19, and RSV...oh my!
How do you know if your child needs these vaccines?
Influenza
Recommended for everyone 6 months old and up.
- Children between 6mo-8yrs, who have never received a flu vaccine, or who have only received 1 dose in their past, will need 2 doses, separated by 1 month. It is best to schedule 1st dose ASAP, so the 2nd dose can be given before the full flu season starts (often January-February, but can be earlier)
- Children >8yrs old, and children who have received 2 influenza doses in their past, only need 1 dose
- Flumist (nasal spray vaccine) is also available for children 2yrs and older, who have had 2 prior influenza vaccines. This is ordered to your home, and you give it to your child--go to flumist.com for information
Covid-19
Recommended for all children ages 6 mo-23 months
- Recommended for all children, 2yrs and older, who have certain medical conditions
- Immunocompromising conditions: Children with weakened immune systems due to disease or medications
- Chronic lung conditions: moderate/severe asthma or other long-term respiratory problems
- Heart conditions: Congenital heart disease or other significant heart issues
- Diabetes: Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes
- Obesity: Excess weight or severe obesity
- Blood disorders: Sickle cell disease
- Other systemic disorders: Chronic kidney, liver, or neurological conditions
Additionally, anyone who would like a covid vaccine for their child who is 6 months and older, can get one.
In our office, we will have the young child dose (for children 11yrs old and under). Older children and teens can get their covid vaccine at local pharmacies.
Children 6mo-23 mo, who have never received a covid vaccine, or who did not complete their primary series, should get 2 doses separated by 1 month.
Children 2yrs and older only need 1 dose.
RSV
Which babies should get an RSV vaccine?
- Infants who are <8 mos old on October 1
- whose mother did not receive an RSV vaccine in pregnancy
- who did not receive an RSV vaccine last winter/spring
These babies should get an RSV vaccine. This is a single dose vaccine.
Please call and ask if your infant qualifies and to schedule their vaccine.
